Plugs is The Angel’s recs column. Every week, you’ll get six picks—a restaurant, a bar, a shop, an ingredient, a person, and a treat—from someone in Los Angeles who knows what they’re talking about, plus a selection of Angel-curated links. (Plugs are for paid subscribers of The Angel only. Free subscribers will receive one Plug; upgrade your subscription to receive all six!)
#50 is Ruby Strassman, a lawyer from New York going on nine years in Los Angeles. After working in the art world for the first part of her career, Ruby transitioned into law. She spent two years working as a judicial law clerk at the U.S. District Court, and she’ll start as an Associate at Frankfurt Kurnit Klein and Selz next month. Ruby and I have been friends since high school, and I’ve always admired her taste, not to mention her ability to find (and befriend) the best bartenders and servers, beauty practitioners, fitness instructors, and fashion salespeople in town. She moved to L.A. five years before I did, which made my move all the more seamless—because I had Ruby, my Barry’s instructors, my waxer, my dentist, and my favorite Erewhon hot bar items were swiftly sorted out. I trust her implicitly, and having her on Plugs is long overdue. Here are her L.A. Plugs!
Restaurant — Angelini
Last year, I moved from Beachwood Canyon to the West Hollywood Hills. My new zip code ushered in a temporary identity crisis, but I then happily realized I now live closer to Angelini. For me, it checks all the boxes: there are almost always reservations available, plenty of outdoor seating, it works for lunch or dinner, you can come with friends or parents, and they accommodate all forms of children (whether your child has two or four legs). One of those food delivery robots is likely to cruise by you on Beverly, and they oddly serve a cous cous amuse-bouche that’s a little random — but aside from those quirks — everything else about your Angelini experience will be easy and solid. Order the lasagna!
