Plugs — Jocelyn Silver
L.A. food, drink, and leisure recs from a fashion and culture writer + LINKS
Plugs is The Angel’s recs column. Every week, you’ll get six picks—a restaurant, a bar, a shop, an ingredient, a person, and a treat—from someone in Los Angeles who knows what they’re talking about, plus a selection of Angel-curated links. (Plugs are for paid subscribers of The Angel only; upgrade your subscription to receive all six!)
#60 is Jocelyn Silver, a freelance writer who covers fashion, art, and lifestyle, among other cultural beats. She has bylines in publications like the Wall Street Journal and New York Magazine, has worked as an editor at Dirt and Gawker, and currently contributes to Vogue, W Magazine, i-D, Architectural Digest, and Dazed. Of her recent stories, one of my favorites is this trend piece on butter sculptures: “Eating angels is fun – when the angels are made out of butter, at least.” She also reports on the party scene in Los Angeles and Paris Fashion Week. Jocelyn hails from San Diego, did her time in New York, and now resides comfortably in Los Angeles. :) Here are her L.A. Plugs!
Restaurant — Yamashiro
Yamashiro restaurant and its surrounding Hollywood Hills property went up for sale last summer for $100 million, and a few weeks ago, a friend sent me a disturbing TikTok stating that the restaurant had sold and was headed for closure. There are no reputable news sources confirming this, but it sent a jolt of fear down my spine, and made it clear that it is time for me to have dinner at Yamashiro. The huge restaurant, with its Japanese gardens and sweeping views, is spectacular and gorgeous. It is very much a vibes place—the food is fine, but it's really about the décor and all the lights below (I pray that some gallery or something will shell out to have a party there soon before its potential demise). The drive to get up there is very glamorous and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
For actual food, the best meals I've had lately were the Horses brunch, dinner at the amazing Izakaya Hero in Westwood, and a banh mi that I made my boyfriend drive 45 minutes out of our way to get at Carrot & Daikon in Westminster. It would be nice to have a holiday dinner at Bistro Na's or La Dolce Vita, where I attended the most fun dinner of my year. I really support that place's commitment to cheetah print.
