Plugs is The Angel’s recs column. Every Saturday, you’ll get six picks — a restaurant, a bar, a shop, an ingredient, a person, and a treat — from someone in Los Angeles who knows what they’re talking about. (Plugs are for paid subscribers of The Angel only. However, if you’re in the restaurant industry and want a free subscription, hit me up. :))
#13 is David Gurzhiev, a photographer from Colorado who lives and works in L.A. Readers of The Angel already know his name, as David’s pictures appear all over the site. His photographs of tuna fishing off Catalina Island, Nicky Fisher inside Fluffy McCloud’s, Dominick DiBartolomeo shaving cheese at his shop, and Erika Chan elbows deep in apple pie have played an immeasurable role in bringing The Angel’s stories to life. David likes to say he takes pictures of everything, so I won’t try to put him in a box, but I will say that he has an acute eye for capturing people operating within the worlds they’ve created—which comes across brilliantly in these pages. I will also say that while he is not a food photographer, he has very discerning taste for food, drinks, vibes, and otherwise. Here are his L.A. plugs!
Restaurant — Mini Kabob
I love Mini Kabob because it’s a very small operation, just Armen and his parents, and I have a lot of respect for that. Also, the food is the best food I’ve had outside of my mom’s kitchen. My grandpa is Armenian from Yerevan, and my mom has been making this food since I was a kid. Everything is perfect from the chicken thigh shish to the falafel that’s full of herbs and not at all dry, a rarity. Armen is super hospitable and remembers you even if you haven’t been there in six months. Bring cash, an appetite, a group of friends, and order family style.
