Plugs is The Angel’s recs column. Every week, you’ll get six picks—a restaurant, a bar, a shop, an ingredient, a person, and a treat—from someone in Los Angeles who knows what they’re talking about. (Plugs are for paid subscribers of The Angel only. However, if you’re in the restaurant industry and want a free subscription, hit me up. :))
#29 is , a chef, recipe developer, and food stylist from the UK living in Los Angeles. On her Substack,
, she publishes recipes like Calabrian chili clams and brothy spring soup with celery, kale, and English peas and shares stories about her life and travels in a passionate and relatable style. Occasionally, you’ll find Chloe popping up around town, hosting dinners at places like Bucatini and Canyon Coffee. Her Instagram is a joy to follow, including for L.A. restaurant content. I’m quite selective about who I seek recommendations from when I travel, but I jumped at the opportunity to acquire Chloe’s London list (where she lived for six years). Her candidacy for Plugs is self-evident. Here they are!Restaurant — Ètra
This one is so hard for me as I have a few tried and true restaurants that I love in L.A. I’m not much of a hype restaurant kind of girl. I go back to the same 5-7 places over and over because I love all of them so much. But currently, that place is Ètra in Melrose Hill. Indeed, this place is hyped—but for good reason. Firstly, the vibe is immaculate. Dim lighting and lots of wooden paneling make for a relaxed but sexy vibe—it reminds me of somewhere in Milan or Rome. The food is glorious and paired back to perfection. By paired back, I mean delicious ingredients and a well-thought-out, cohesive menu but no unnecessary frills. My pet peeve is going to a restaurant where each dish has eight ingredients and three different types of foam. Ètra is perfect! [Editor’s note: everyone loves Ètra!]
