Plugs is The Angel’s recs column. Every Saturday, you’ll get six picks — a restaurant, a bar, a shop, an ingredient, a person, and a treat — from someone in Los Angeles who knows what they’re talking about. (Plugs are for paid subscribers of The Angel only. However, if you’re in the restaurant industry and want a free subscription, hit me up. :))
#14 is Becky Rosen-Checa, a talent buyer at Goldenvoice who books two legendary Los Angeles music venues, The Roxy and El Rey Theatre. Neil Young, Weezer, and The 1975 are just a few names she’s signed, sealed, and delivered. Becky and I met during the first week of college at Wesleyan and have been best friends ever since. Like me, she grew up in New York City and then moved out here to start her career in the music industry after graduation. Since then, she’s had her hands in big-time shows at The Greek and Shrine Auditorium, plus festivals including Coachella and more. Her resume speaks for itself, as does her taste. Here are her L.A. plugs!
Restaurant — L & E Oyster Bar
I tend to avoid restaurants that don’t take reservations because I’m allergic to waiting, but L & E is an exception. Thanks to the bar upstairs, I can pass the time by sipping a martini in one of its cozy nooks. Once your table is ready, it’s a bit more about the vibes than food. Don’t get me wrong, the food is good—oysters, wedge salad, lobster mac & cheese, crab linguine, lobster roll, more martinis—but there’s a lot of good food in L.A. The restaurant is pretty small, and while there is some outdoor seating, I prefer to sit inside. It’s a great date spot, romantic or platonic, and as a hater of large group dinners, I love the intimacy of L & E.
