Plugs — Austin Tedesco
L.A. food, drink, and leisure recs from a Substack staffer and former line cook + LINKS
Plugs is The Angel’s recs column. Every week, you’ll get six picks—a restaurant, a bar, a shop, an ingredient, a person, and a treat—from someone in Los Angeles who knows what they’re talking about, plus a selection of Angel-curated links. (Plugs are for paid subscribers of The Angel only. However, if you’re in the restaurant industry and want a free subscription, hit me up. :))
#42 is , the podcast and video partnerships lead at Substack with a personal, even vested interest in food. Before joining Substack, Austin worked the line at Cool World (a now-closed restaurant in Brooklyn), and before that, he was an editorial strategist for Square and an editor at ESPN. He currently lives in New York, but he used to live in Los Angeles. He spent all of July here, visits regularly for business and pleasure, and…. word on the street is he’s moving back. Austin also writes (food recs, culture stuff and light judgment) on Substack. Here are his L.A. plugs!
Restaurant — Mariscos Jalisco
Now that I spend more time on the East Coast, the thing I find myself missing the most is L.A.’s Mexican and Thai food. It’s the first thing I seek out when I’m back in town. Very little in New York can compete with L.A.’s offerings across my two favorite cuisines, but absolutely nothing can touch the tacos de camaron at Mariscos Jalisco on Olympic — my favorite single bite of food. Always order two. Add on the poseidon if you have room. Take someone for their first time and watch their reaction. It truly never gets any less special.
