Plugs is The Angel’s recs column. Every week, you’ll get six picks—a restaurant, a bar, a shop, an ingredient, a person, and a treat—from someone in Los Angeles who knows what they’re talking about. (Plugs are for paid subscribers of The Angel only. However, if you’re in the restaurant industry and want a free subscription, hit me up. :))

#39 is Ally Walsh, the co-founder of Canyon Coffee (alongside her husband, Casey). For most Angelenos, Canyon needs no introduction, but for those living under a rock, it is an organic roaster and wholesaler with a wildly popular Echo Park café (bonus points for their coffee-forward travel guides). Ally and Casey started Canyon in 2016 from their Beachwood Canyon apartment. Today, their beans are brewed in cafés, offices, and hotels and sold in shops and markets throughout L.A. and across the country. Their own coffee shop, which opened almost two years ago on Echo Park Ave, is one of the Eastside’s premiere locales to see and be seen and, notably, was the first place to serve Sasha Piligian’s pastries since she broke out on her own. Now, Ally resides in Altadena with Casey and their son, Sonny. Here are her L.A. plugs! (P.S. If you read last week’s Plugs, you’ll notice something cute happening here…)

Restaurant — MIYA มีญ่า

Miya has become a go-to for us. It’s very close to us in Altadena, and I’ve really enjoyed watching its journey from essentially a kitchen with a pick-up counter to a cozy little restaurant. I love all their spicy dishes. Their red pumpkin curry is my favorite, and we always get the fried spring rolls. Sometimes we order for pick-up when we’re having friends over, sometimes we meet up there after picking up Sonny from daycare — usually on Tuesdays, because it’s vegetarian night! Their staff are always so charming. It feels like a great neighborhood spot.
