Plugs is The Angel’s recs column. Every Saturday, you’ll get six picks — a restaurant, a bar, a shop, an ingredient, a person, and a treat — from someone in Los Angeles who knows what they’re talking about. (Plugs are for paid subscribers of The Angel only. However, if you’re in the restaurant industry and want a free subscription, hit me up. :))
#15 is Alice Lam, whose beautiful floral work I first came across at Horses. (Check out her recent holiday install there.) Alice runs A.L. Basa, a creative studio that specializes in floristry and botanical design. She does weekly flowers for Dunsmoor and Bar Chelou, installations for brands like Hermés and Apple TV+, and builds bouquets for none other than Kim Kardashian. If I were opening a restaurant, launching a brand, or even just having a party, I’d tap Alice for florals. Take a spin through the A.L. Basa Instagram and you’ll see that she has exquisite taste. Here are her L.A. plugs!
Restaurant — Dan Sung Sa
I’m late on this one because I didn't start going to Dan Sung Sa until I moved back to L.A. in 2019. I’ve been told it’s a staple that’s blown up over the last decade. Still, it remains solid. No reservations here, so I go as soon as they open to skip the peak dinner crowd. I love nothing more than to sit in a dark, bustling, and energetically vibrant restaurant that can transport you. It’s a little escape from the outside world.
