Goodbye, L.A. I love you, L.A.
Some sad news: I’m leaving Los Angeles. What does that mean for The Angel?
Hi angels,
I won’t bury the lede: David and I are moving to Brooklyn this fall. “But, what? You love L.A.,” you might be thinking. It’s true, I do. This wasn’t an easy decision, and my heart has been in knots since we made up our minds earlier this year. I feel like I’m going through a breakup with someone I’m still completely enamored with.
We’re returning to New York because it’s where the majority of our family lives, but living in Los Angeles has been a dream come true. I wish I had arrived here earlier, or could’ve stayed longer. I’m a New Yorker, but I hope I can also be considered an honorary Angeleno, regardless of this news.
The Angel in its entirety has been one big love letter to L.A. comprised of 31 profiles, five features, 19 lists, six travel guides, five specials, a three-part salad series, four chit-chats, four musings, four photo galleries, and almost 90 editions of Plugs, so I’ll spare you the sap for now. Yet there’s so much more to say, some of which will unfold over the next several weeks as The Angel embarks on a goodbye tour of L.A.
Coming up next, I have one last profile to share, a thrilling list that I commissioned from L.A.’s very own (read: New York transplant)
, and several efforts on my part to take inventory of everything I’ll miss and won’t (this city isn’t perfect, after all!). There will be one more edition of My Los Angeles Right Now and eight more editions of Plugs. Finally, David and I will announce an extra-special project we’ve been working on to close out this chapter correctly, with a bang. We’re not leaving yet. We still have a few months left to soak up L.A. However, I’ll be taking some time off from Substack between late summer and the beginning of next year to move, recharge, and rejigger the publication.
At first, I thought I’d leave The Angel in Los Angeles. This project wasn’t just born here; it’s also deeply rooted in this city. But the feedback I’ve received from peers and readers who were in on this news, combined with my belief in The Angel's intention — to tell the untold stories of the people and places shaping the food world, both locally and globally — has me excited to continue. I think there’s room for The Angel in New York, and possibly beyond. What exactly that looks like, only time will tell…
After six final weeks of L.A. programming, I’ll pause all paid subscriptions until I’m ready to relaunch. If you’re not keen on coming along for the East Coast evolution, I understand. I’m endlessly grateful for your support thus far, and I hope to see you on the other side.
If you see me around before we depart, please say hi!
<3,
Emily
P.S. If you need recs for NYC, I updated The Angel’s New York City yesterday.
