Here on The Angel, we’re typically talking all things food. But when I’m not eating, I like to be schvitzing, soaking, or scrubbing at one of our city’s fine bathhouses. Korean spas, Russian banyas, Finnish saunas—I hit them all (and would love more Japanese onsen-style options, if anyone is listening). And as far as I’m concerned, food is an integral part of the spa-going experience.

That’s part of why it was so easy for me to connect with Courtney Wittich, the founder of S.P.A. [Salus Per Aquam], the preeminent bathing newsletter of our time. Coco agrees that spa food goes way beyond cucumber water and crudités—and confirmed my belief that food just tastes better after you’ve sweated everything out. Given our shared interests, I thought it would be fun to compile a little guide to the best spa + food pairings around town—the bathhouses (some of which have in-house cafes), and the restaurants close to them to visit afterwards to replenish yourself. Below, her top picks in L.A. and New York—take it away, Coco!
